WEEKEND: February 21-22, 2009 – State Tournament Play-offs at the Forum at Fishers

It was State Tournament play-off weekend and Brebeuf was the #2 seed in 3A. (Interestingly, 2 teams to which Brebeuf lost at every meeting during the season were lower seeds [Cathedral-Chatard, #5 seed/4 loses and North Central, #7 seed/2 loses] and were the 2 teams who advanced to the finals!) Based on previous outings against the teams Brebeuf was slated to play (North Central, South Bend Riley, and Cathedral-Chatard), everything would have to come together quickly for Brebeuf if they were going to advance out of their bracket.

Although the Brebeuf team put forth some of its best efforts of the season, it was not enough. In games that could have gone either way, Brebeuf lost 2-3 to North Central, tied South Bend Riley, 2-2 on Saturday, and lost to Lawrence on Sunday, 2-3.

Sunday, February 22, 2009, 10:45AM vs. Lawrence (state tournament)

Although the outcome of the game meant nothing in regard to either team with a chance to advance, the Brebeuf team was still taking this game seriously!

Brebeuf got on the board first at 14:42 in the first period. Trosky started the break-out with a pass to Robbins who raced it up the ice and took a shot. The Lawrence goalie made the save, but the puck ricocheted out to about 6 feet in front of the goal. Ort, who was also sprinting up the ice, picked up the puck and put it in over the right shoulder of the Lawrence goalie before the goalie could recover.

Lawrence answered with a goal at 9:40 and another at 4:57 in the first period to go ahead. Brebeuf continued to work the puck and try to create scoring opportunities. One finally came with 1:43 left in the second period. Trosky made a pass from the point to Robbins who was at the left side of the net. Robbins sent the pass through the crease to Challis, who zinged the puck into the net for the score, tying the game.

Lawrence added the game winning goal at 9:47 in the third. They had another opportunity to score, on a penalty shot, but Wagner shut down the Lawrence player.

Brebeuf continued to put pressure on Lawrence’s goalie, out shooting Lawrence, 34-27, but Lawrence’s goalie snagged too many saves and didn’t give much up in rebounds, effectively shutting down Brebeuf’s chances to score.

Saturday, February 21, 2009, 4:45PM vs. South Bend Riley (state tournament)

The last time Brebeuf faced Riley, Riley’s top goalie was serving a game misconduct, and did not play. It was time to see if Brebeuf could stand up against Riley as they had the last time.

With 4:34 gone in the game, Brebeuf was on a power-play. A Riley player intercepted a pass near the blue line and took the puck into his offensive zone and took a shot from probably 15 feet out from the goal. It was almost as though Hammond had too much time to think about the save, and the puck went past him into the net, putting Riley up 1-0. Wagner, who had just come from swimming in state sectionals, went into goal at 10:26 in the first and finished out the game for Brebeuf.

Brebeuf knuckled down and played tough defense after that first Riley goal. At 10:16 in the second, Riley was able to score again, taking advantage of a Brebeuf penalty. Brebeuf kept up the pressure. With possession of the puck in Brebeuf’s offensive zone, Grande was getting pressure from Riley and dished the puck to French at the point. French took a shot that zinged past the goalie…don’t think Riley’s goalie saw it coming!

At 10:46 in the third period, Brebeuf tied the game on a power-play goal by Robbins. Working the puck around the zone, Grande, from next to the net, sent the puck to Trosky at the point; Trosky made a diagonal pass across the ice to Robbins, who one-timed it into the net.

Both teams were held in check, with the game ending in the 2-2 tie.

Saturday, February 21, 2009, 9:45AM vs. North Central Panthers (state tournament)

North Central struck first, scoring a short-handed goal at 11:34 in the first period. Although the Brebeuf players were down, but not out and regrouped to score 14 seconds later. During the same North Central penalty/Brebeuf power-play, Brebeuf won the face-off. Grande took control of the puck at the red line, with Robbins trailing as the crossed the blue line. Both sprinted for the net. The play is always beautiful when it works, and it worked for Brebeuf. Grande, from the left side of the goal, got the North Central goalie to commit, then sent the puck through the crease to Robbins, who put it in the net, wrist shot, top shelf.

Brebeuf scored the next goal, also in the first period at 3:36. With a lot of action around the net, Robbins took control of the puck, took it around the net and took a shot. The rebound was grabbed by Cohn, who protected the puck, dished it off to Marchesani, who took the shot, which rebounded off the goalie (who had lost sight of the puck), and dribbled in across the goal line.

With seconds left in the first period, North Central was moving the puck well in their offensive zone. Just before the buzzer went off to end the period, a North Central player sent a shot from the top of the circle on net. Wagner moved to react, but the puck just snuck in over Wagner’s right shoulder.

Brebeuf played hard and good defense through the second and third periods. With 2:09 left in the game, a North Central player got past the Brebeuf defender, and took an easy shot from about 8 feet in front of the net. Wagner was indecisive with his choice to make the save, and the puck went in between his legs. Brebeuf continued to put pressure on the North Central goalie, but couldn’t get anything to go in.

Sunday, February 15, 2009, 10:30AM vs. North Central at The Coliseum

North Central dominated the scoring, shutting out Brebeuf, 3-0. Brebeuf had another game where they outshot their opponent (30 shots vs. 15 for North Central), but couldn’t get anything past the opponent’s goalie. Brebeuf also didn’t given North Central many power-play opportunities, the Braves only having one player receive 2 consecutive 2-min penalties, one of which was off-setting with a NC penalty. Brebeuf, however, could not capitalize on the 6 power-play opportunities offered by NC. North Central scored one goal in each of the 3 periods, all at even-strength. In the second period, NC had one goal on their one shot for the period.

Saturday, February 14, 2009, 8:00PM, Carmel-1 vs. Noblesville Millers
       (non-league/SENIOR NIGHT)

Senior Night started with the game against Noblesville. The Braves weren’t very effective on offense, managing only 2 goals on 39 shots-on-goal compared to Noblesville’s 2 goals on 19 shots-on-goal and only capitalizing on 1 of the 7 power-play opportunities.

Noblesville scored first at 6:29 in the first period on a power-play. With 4:05 left in the first, the defense was told to change, so Creighton took a slap shot from the point. It probably surprised him as much as the Noblesville goalie when it went in!

Noblesville’s second goal was also on a power-play, occurring at 5:17 in the second. It was the only scoring during the second period.

Brebeuf continued to fight to mount any type of offense and was finally successful in the third period. Half-way into a power-play, Bosserman picked up the puck behind the net, then lost it. The puck was picked up by Trosky, who took a shot, which rebounded and was sitting a few feet from the goal line when Bosserman descended upon it and put it in over the right shoulder of the goalie.

As hard as Brebeuf tried, they couldn’t get another shot past the Noblesville goalie. The game ended in a 2-2 tie.

After the game, Senior Night festivities took place. Honored were seniors Andru Creighton, Marc Goldsticker, Ben Grande, Mike Robbins, Elliott Trosky, and Daniel Warschauer.

Friday, February 6, 2009, 9:45PM vs. Cathedral-Chatard at The Forum at Fishers (Hoosier League Tournament)

Brebeuf had another dismal Friday night outing, losing in their first and only game of the Hoosier League Tournament, 0-5 to Cathedral-Chatard

There was hope that this game would not be a repeat of other games against Cathedral-Chatard when the Braves were playing C-C even in the first period. Brebeuf held C-C scoreless until 1:37 in the first period. After that, Cathedral-Chatard has an easy time of it, getting 3 goals in the second, including one short-handed goal, and their fifth and last goal at 8:35 in the third period.

Brebeuf couldn’t muster any offense, having only 16 shots-on-goal, and couldn’t capitalize on 9 power-play opportunties.

FRIDAY, January 23, 2009, 9:45PM vs. Noblesville (league)

Brebeuf was the chosen team to play Noblesville on their Senior Night. They played Noblesville to a 3-3 tie.

Noblesville started quickly, scoring at 14:18 in the first period, after Brebeuf’s defensemen took themselves out of the play.

Brebeuf didn’t come back until 7:41 in the second, when, on a power-play set-up, Creighton’s shot from the point ricocheted off Grande’s stick, as he tipped it into the net.

Noblesville’s next goal was at 6:41 in the second period.

Brebeuf tied it up at 2:43 in the second and then went ahead at 13:24 in the third period. The first goal was a power-play by Challis. Robbins sent the pass across the ice to Trosky, who sent it cross to Challis. Challis, who was almost directly in line with the goal, fired a rocket, from an almost impossible angle, that hit just inside the goal as a score. The second goal, by Grande, was from a couple of feet outside the net and caught the Noblesville goalie committed to the other side.

Noblesville didn’t give up and tied the game at 8:53 in the third period. Both teams held each other in check, the game ending in a 3-3 tie.

SUNDAY, December 14, 2008, 11:45AM vs. HSE A (league)

Sunday marked the second and LAST meeting between Brebeuf and HSE A! The Braves did themselves 1 goal better than the last time, with the final score 1-9. The Brebeuf team couldn’t match the depth anddiscipline of the HSE A team.

HSE A put in their first goal at 29 seconds into the game, and then added 3 more goals in the first period (6:45, 2:05, 0:46). Brebeuf only had 1 shot-on-goal that period, and that was on a pass out of their defensive goal that just happened to go on net.

Brebeuf played a better second period, mounting 9 shots-on-goal and getting a goal at 7:57. A 5-on- poer play opportunity put a lot of Brebeuf action around the net. Marchesani sent a pass to Bosserman who skated the puck around the net and slid the puck in past the HSE A goalies, who had lost sight of the puck. HSE A put in 2 goals in the second (13:49, 9:57) before Brebeuf got their only goal of the game.

HSE A added 3 more goals in the third period, bringing their final goal tally to 9. There was running clock in the third period.

Brebeuf seemed to be in control of the game, scoring first. At 9:24 in the first period, Dyar scooped up a Hinkebein rebound for the score. Brebeuf’s second goal was a long time coming. At 13:52 in the second period, Brebeuf had a power-play opportunity and Creighton got off a slap-shot from the point, that was tipped in by Ort. Munster answered quickly, with a goal at 12:32 and 11:29, to tie the game.

Brebeuf went ahead again at 7:13 in the second. Robbins skated the puck up the ice, got the Munster goalie to commit on a faked shot, and sent it across the net to Dyer, who one-timed it into the net. Munster fought back, tying the game at 5:21, then going ahead at 2;34. Brebeuf tied the game with a power-play goal by Marchesani at 2:23.

In the third period, Munster went ahead at 10:45. Challis put in the tying goal at 4:42, with what turned out to be the final goal of the game.

WEEKEND, November 28-29, 2008 – (3 games below)
T-BIRD/SCOTTEN MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT, sponsored by HSE B

The Brebeuf hockey team played in the HSE B-sponsored T-Bird Cross-Over/Scotten Memorial Tournament over the holiday weekend. The players spent their energy skating instead of shopping and their parents passed their time in a rink instead of a store!

The Braves challenged Park Tudor with their best effort of the season against them, but lost 4-6. They split the cross-over games, losing to South Bend Clay, 0-2, but beating South Bend Adams, 6-0.

For the weekend, the Braves were without Brebeuf goalies Harrison Wagner (injured) and Jackson Hammond (family commitment), so the team’s thanks go out to freshman Mack Hays, an HSE C goalie who played against Park Tudor and South Bend Adams, and Cathedral’s Vince Indiano, who played against South Bend Clay. We also thank their parents for allowing them to help us out over their “off” weekend.

Saturday, November 29, 2008, 4:30PM vs. South Bend Adams (cross-over)

The Brebeuf hockey team ended the weekend with a sound win against South Bend Adams, winning 6-0. Underclassmen found their rhythm, accounting for 4 of the 6 goals. Overall, it was a good game for the less-experienced underclassmen because the Adams team presented a challenge, but the underclassmen found that they could skate with them and score against them! Things started to click, which made good things happen.

Brebeuf’s first goal was scored at even-strength at 9:38 in the first period. Trosky carried the puck up the ice, got off a shot that was blocked, but Grande was there to put in the rebound for the goal. Brebeuf’s next goal was at 4:33 in the second, a Robbins-to-Ort-to-Challis power-play set-up. Goal #3 at 0:44 in the second was an even-strength goal by Cohn. Bosserman had carried the puck up the ice and gotten off a shot at the corner of the net, drawing the defensemen and goalie in that direction. The puck rebounded and was sitting, centered in front of the net about 4 feet from the goalline. Cohn was where he was supposed to be, in front of the net, and before the goalie could come across the net to get into position, Cohn got the score!

The Robbins-to-Ort-to-Challis power-play trio accounted for the 4th goal. Stuart Bosserman set up the 5th goal, as he did the 3rd, only Andrew Marchesani was the forward in front of the net, ready to take advantage of a goalie out-of-position! The last goal was scored with 50 seconds left in the game, with Robbins winning the face-off and directing the puck to Creighton who skated in for another power-play goal.

Friday, November 28, 2008, 2:45PM vs. Park Tudor (non-league)

It was another fast, physical, and furious game against Park Tudor, with the Braves coming up short, 4-6. This effort was an improvement on the previous 0-2 and 0-3 outings against this team.

There was evidence of a better game for the Braves when they struck first, at 10:05 in the first period. Bosserman caught a pass from Marchesani about mid-ice and motored it up the ice with 2 defensemen closing in on him. With patience, he waited that ½ second to put it over the goalie for the score.

It was deja-vu when Park Tudor put in 4 consecutive goals, the first at 8:42 in the first, then at 7:53, 1:32, and 10:20 in the second. Brebeuf came back with 2 goals. In the second period, Robbins skated the puck up the ice. With 2 opposing skaters on him, Robbins took a shot, the rebound bouncing to Challis who put it in at 8:31. On a Trosky slap-shot rebound, Grande found the puck and put it in at 14:07 to start the scoring in the third period.

Park Tudor came back with 2 more in the third, at 7:15 and 4:37. The Braves didn’t give up. Using a power-play opportunity, with only 29 seconds left in the game, the Braves capitalized on the situation. Playing 5-man hockey, the Braves worked the puck around the zone, getting off a series of shots with a lot of action at the net. Finally, Challis got the puck to Robbins, who got off a shot that was saved by the goalie, but Trosky was there to scoop up the rebound and put it in with 6 seconds left in the game.

Sunday, November 24, 2008, 10:30AM vs. HSE B (league)

Turn about was fair play when the Brebeuf hockey team beat HSE B, 3-2, having lost to them previously, 2-3.

Both teams played sound defense and the game could have gone either way. Brebeuf, again, outshot their opponent, 30-24, but this time they held on for the win!

Grande had the first score of the game at 10:19 in the first period, taking advantage of HSE B’s first penalty. HSE B came back, scoring at 4:02 and then took the lead on a power-play goal at 1:19. Robbins tied the game at 14:18 in the second period. Ort fed Robbins the puck in the neutral zone and Robbins took it into the offensive zone with HSE B players in hot pursuit. An HSE B player cut in front of him to stop the score, but as he was going down, he got the shot off. A surprised HSE B goalie didn’t see it coming! The third Brebeuf goal came at 3:34 in the second period. Robbins caught an HSE pass before it went out of the zone and as the HSE players descended upon him, he got the cross-ice pass at the blue line off to Creighton who slapped it at the net from the point for the winning goal.

Hammond had a tremendous game, making several saves that could have made the ESPN highlights! He protected the win through the 18 1/2minutes after Brebeuf’s last goal.

Saturday, November 23, 2008, 8:30PM vs. Lawrence (league)

As is usually the case, the game against Lawrence was fast and physical. Brebeuf had the effort and the shots, outshooting Lawrence, 35-23, but they couldn’t overcome Lawrence’s hot goalie, losing 0-6.

Brebeuf had 6 power-play opportunities, but couldn’t capitalize. The Braves held Lawrence to 2 goals through 2 periods, but were worn down in the third period. Missing 3 forwards took its toll, and Lawrence was able to score 2 goals at 10:59 and 10:04 and added 2 more at 1:56 and 1:18 in the third to put the game out of reach for Brebeuf.

The next score didn’t occur until 12:19 in the second period when Carmel White scored their first. Cohn scored his first Brebeuf goal at 11:55 in the second period. Carmel White was staying in the game, adding their second goal at 6:09. Robbins put in his second goal at 444 to end the4 scoring for the period.

The Brebeuf hockey team traveled to the southside to take on the South Stars Varisty “A”/Blue team, but couldn’t find any offense, losing 0-4. The South Stars played tough defense, not giving the Braves many opportunities for quality shots on goal. With only 2 South Stars’ penalties, power-play opportunities also did not present themselves.

Saturday, November 15, 2008, 7:45PM vs. Columbus Icemen (league/at Columbus)

The Brebeuf hockey team added another tie to their record (5-10-3) against the Columbus Icemen, finishing the game at 4-4. This was an improvement from the previous 2-3 loss to this Columbus team.

Robbins scored the first goal of the game, an angle shot high, blocker side, at 7:53 in the first period to get things going for the Braves, capitalizing on a 5-on-3 opportunity. Columbus answered at 1:51 to tie the game.

With a Brebeuf player in the box, Robbins won the face-off in the neutral zone and sent the puck into the Brebeuf offensive zone. The Icemen got possession and in trying to move the puck out, one of the Icemen whiffed on his pass, allowing Challis to pick it up and put it in the net, past a surprised Columbus goalie.

Columbus then went on the offensive, scoring the next 3 goals, the first at 10:26 in the second period, then at 14:22 and 9:35 in the third. The Icemen were playing tough defense and a 2-goal deficit looked like it might be tough to overcome, but Brebeuf did not give up!!

Creighton scored with a shot from the point at 9:01 in the third period on a defenseman (Sherlock)-to-defenseman across ice set-up at the blue line. The Robbins-to Creighton-to Grande power-play trio added the final Brebeuf goal with 4:18 left in the game. The goal ricocheted off the Columbus goalie, who lost the puck, and the puck dribbled across the line and in to clinch the tie.

SUNDAY, November 9, 2008, 3:45PM vs. Hamilton Southeastern B (league)

Brebeuf came up a goal short against HSE B, losing 2-3.

The only score in the first period was at 5:11 by HSE B. Brebeuf’s only 2 goals came in the second period. The first was by Robbins at 13:07. Robbins was actually sending the puck into the corner to set up a play when the puck ricocheted off the metal post holding the glass. The HSE B goalie had come over to his right to make the stop and the puck went in over his left shoulder. (This is one of those, you take what you can get goals…this one just might make the “most unusual scores” list!)

HSE B went ahead with a goal at 5:48. Trosky added an unassisted goal from the point at 4:58.

SATURDAY, November 8, 2008, 3:45PM vs. Crown Point Bulldogs (cross-over)

Brebeuf was well-matched against the Crown Point Bulldogs, playing them to a 3-3 tie

Most of the game’s scoring came in the first period. Grande found the net first for Brebeuf at 11:49. It didn’t take Crown Point long to come back, scoring their first goal at 10:49. Crown Point went ahead at 9:17 on a Trosky to Robbins to Creighton power-play goal. Challis added Brebeuf’s third and last goal at 2:34 in the first period.

Both teams were held scoreless through the second period and well into the third. Finally at 8:52, Crown Point took advantage of the power-play and snuck one in, a shot from the point. Hammond could only watch it slide by on his right side, on the ice, as he was just a fraction-of-a-second too late to make the stop.

Crown Point outshot Brebeuf, 26 vs. 21 shots, and Hammond had some excellent saves to thwart Crown Point’s attempts to get the win, stopping 8 of 9 shots in the third period.

FRIDAY, November 7, 2008, 9:15PM vs. Hamilton Southeastern A (league)

The Brebeuf hockey team could not compete with the depth and experience of the Hamilton Southeastern A team, losing 0-9. Although the Braves put up a valiant effort, they could not muster any offense, not even on the 6 power-play opportunities.

The Braves held HSE A scoreless until 1:06 in the first period, with only 1 other goal added at the close of the first period (0:17). Then, the depth of the HSE A team wore Brebeuf down and they added four goals in the second period and 3 in the third.
