WEEKEND: Saturday, March 1 – Sunday, March 2, 2008:
4A STATE TOURNAMENT POOL PLAY
It was a bittersweet weekend for the Brebeuf hockey team. For the 5th time in the 6 years of its existence, the Brebeuf hockey team won the Henry G. Schallert Team Academic Award for, again, having the highest average GPA across all 36 high school hockey teams in the state. Don Perkins, in his 19th year as Brebeuf’s head Varsity hockey coach, was inducted into the IN High School Hockey Hall of Fame. Matt DeRyckere won the J. Howard Guitard Award, one of 4 scholarships sponsored by the IN High School Hockey Association, awarded for academic achievement, community service, leadership, and sportsmanship.

The team, however, was not able to advance out of the 4A bracket, beating South Bend Riley High School 6-1, but losing to Park Tudor, 2-3 and Lawrence, 1-2. Riley, the 7th seed in 4A, advanced from our bracket, beating Park Tudor and Lawrence, and will meet Carmel Gold in the State Championship game.

Even though he couldn’t play (concussion), Richard Key suited up and was on the bench with his teammates for the games.

Individual game recaps below.

SATURDAY, March 1, 2008, 1PM vs. Park Tudor at the Forum at Fishers

The won-loss record pattern against Park Tudor had been first game, win; second game, loss; and 3rd game, win. This was their 4th meeting and the pattern did not bode well for the Braves. Unfortunately, the pattern held, and Brebeuf lost 2-3.

Both teams were held scoreless through the first period. Brebeuf scored first at 8:03 in the 2nd period on a power-play goal by Grande, set up from a M. Bosserman pass. Brebeuf struck again, with 4 seconds left in the 2nd. Trosky made the long cross-ice pass from the defensive zone to Robbins, who took it up the ice, then dished it Grande, who put it into the net with the Park Tudor goalie still on the other side of the net!

The fans felt good with the 2 goal lead, but Park Tudor is hot a team to give up. In the 3rd period, they dug in to win. Their first score came at 14:27 on a power-play. Their 2nd and tying goal was also on a power-play. It came on a hard rebound off Nasser, which bounced out to almost the blue line, directly inline with the net, where their defenseman put it into the net, with Nasser watching it go over her shoulder! Park Tudor’s winning goal came at 7:01, with a rebound putting the puck at the feet of a Park Tudor player, who put it into the net with nothing but blue sky.

SATURDAY, March 1, 2008, 8PM vs. South Bend Riley at the Forum at Fishers

Riley, the 7th seed in 4A, posed no problem for the Brebeuf hockey team. The Braves handled them easily, winning 6-1. All goals by both teams were scored at even strength.

Brebeuf dominated the game. Grande scored the first Brebeuf goal, unassisted, just 56 seconds into the game. Two more unassisted goals were put in by Robbins at 11:16 and 6:00 in the first period. The 4th Braves goal came 35 seconds into the 2nd period. The goal was set up by Grande who passed it from along the boards to Robbins, who was mid-zone, and, as he was being tied up and going down, was able to reach the puck, pushing it with his stick, to Goldsticker, who rifled it into the net. Grande had his 2nd goal at 3:13 in the 2nd on a pass from Goldsticker. Riley snuck a goal in at 2:41 in the 2nd period to end the shut-ut for Nasser. Robbins had his 3rd/hat-trick goal at 12:45 in the 3rd, to end the Braves scoring.

SUNDAY, March 2, 2008, 1PM vs. Lawrence at the Forum at Fishers

The day dawned with Brebeuf holding their fate in their hands. Lawrence had beaten Park Tudor and Brebeuf only had to beat Lawrence to advance…they had done it 3 times before! Park Tudor was playing Riely and even if park Tudor won, and Brebeuf and Park Tudor were tied, the next tiebreaker was least goals against, for which Brebeuf had the edge 4-7 over Park Tudor.

Brebeuf went out o top first, at 7:05 in the first. M. Bosserman scored on a power-play. Creighton had controlled the puck from the face-off, and passed it up and across to Robbins, at the point, who brought it up the boards, and made the pass to M Bosserman, who was waiting in front of the net. Bosserman had the patience to wait for the goalie to commit and put it in over his leg pad. Lawrence tied it up at 12:00 in the 2nd. Lawrence’s winning goal came at 14:32 in the 3rd, when the puck sailed along the ice into Nasser’s glove. Unfortunately, she didn’t cover the puck, and the Lawrence player pulled it back, scooped it up, and put it in over her shoulder. Brebeuf couldn’t mount any offense that found the inside of the net, and ended the game with a 1 goal deficit. Lawrence’s goalie, again, gave his team the victory, having 42 saves. Brebeuf outshot Lawrence 43 to 18.

Brebeuf's Senior Night Weekend on Saturday night

Individual game recaps below.
_____________________________________________________________

Friday, February 22, 2008, 8:00PM vs. Cathedral-Chatard
at Forum at Fishers (non-league game)

It was Cathedral-Chatard’s Senior Night and Brebeuf gave them a gift, losing 1-5. The team was down 5 players (Trosky, Creighton, Worden at Kairos, Key out with a sinus infection, Robbins only seeing limited action due to his dislocated shoulder incurred during the Lawrence game).

From the start, Brebeuf couldn’t get much going. Adding to that, the referee didn’t call much, and Brebeuf could only capitalize on 1 of 4 power-play opportunities. Trosky made it to the game at the beginning of the 2nd period, and was in on that score. The score came at 5:03 in the 2nd starting with Robbins at the point sending a lateral pass to Challis at the other point; Trosky took a shot, and Gianaris was there to slam home the rebound. Cathedral-Chatard had 2 scores in the first period (11:15 and 1:45) and 3 scores in the 3rd (9:35, 6:24, 1:23), 3 as even strength, 1 on a power-play and 1 short-handed goal.

SENIOR NIGHT: Saturday, February 23, 2008, 5:45PM vs. Park Tudor
at Carmel 1 (non-league game)

The 6 Brebeuf hockey team senior players were honored before the game. Michael Bosserman, Matt DeRyckere, Alex Gianaris, Richard Key, Suzy Nasser, and Evan Werckenthien and their parents and siblings were honored during the on-ice ceremony. The faculty, including Dr. Matt Hays, and student turnout was one the best ever!

Those who were there saw a hard-fought game…not unusual with Park Tudor as the opponent. Brebeuf held on to win 8-6.

With Robbins just playing power-plays (due to his dislocated shoulder), he started the Brebeuf scoring on a power-play at 7:20 in the first period. Park Tudor then scored the next 4 goals (4:42 in the first; 14:20, 13:24, and 12:00 in the 2nd). Brebeuf answered with 4 goals of their own, with Michael Bosserman contributing a hat-trick’s worth of goals (10:44, 7:47, 6:35 in the 2nd) and Worden having the other goal at 7:32 in the 2nd. After that, the scoring went back and forth. Park Tudoe scored at 4:58, then DeRyckere connected on one at 0:39. Grande put one in to start the 3rd period (14:37). Park Tudor came within 1 with a score at 12:52. Brebeuf then had to play smart hockey, staying out of the box, and sound defense. They did all that plus put in 1 more goal on a power-play Robbins to Creighton connection at 1:45.

NOTE: It is with sadness that we must report that, during this game, senior Richard Key suffered his 4th and career-ending concussion. He and his smart play will be missed as a significant contributor to the Brebeuf offensive scheme-of-things.

Saturday, February 16, 2008 vs. Lawrence at Carmel 2 (non-league game)

The score of the game against Lawrence (3-1) did not reflect the battle that it was. Lawrence’s goalie kept his team in the game, stopping 29 shots, with Brebeuf outshooting Lawrence almost 2:1.

This was the first game in a long while that all players were on the bench—no injuries, no illnesses…but that was short-lived! In the first period, a cheap Lawrence check-from-behind dislocated Robbins’ shoulder…so much for that full roster!

The teams played even until 5:58 in the first when Worden found the puck at his feet, mid-offensive zone, and took it in for the score. M. Bosserman scored just 42 seconds into the 2nd period on a power-play opportunity, contributing what became the winning goal! Lawrence put their goal in the net at 5:10 in the second period. Trosky added an insurance goal on a rocket from the point at 2:23 in the 3rd period.

Sunday, February 17, 2008, 11:45AM vs. Noblesville Millers
at Carmel 2 (non-league game)

The Braves fell 2 goals short of a win against Noblesville. losing 2-3. Noblesville’s defense kept Brebeuf away from the net in the first period. The Braves were, however, 100% efficient with their shooting…their 1 shot for the period by M. Bosserman resulted in a goal for Brebeuf! Noblesville tied it up at 2:26 in the first, and went ahead at 14:13 in the 2nd period. Brebeuf tied it at 12:51 on an unassisted goal by Key. Brebeuf only had 4 shots-on-goal in the 2nd period. Noblesville scored a period later (at 12:41 in the 3rd) to go ahead for good. Although Brebeuf finally had their shots go on net in the 3rd period (with 15 shots-on-goal), none of them could get past the Noblesville goalie.

They couldn’t, however, hold on to outlast the #2 seed, Carmel Gold, and lost 3-4 in sudden-death overtime.

Friday, February 8, 2008, 6:30PM vs. Perry South Stars at the Forum at Fishers
(Hoosier League Tournament game)

This South Stars team earned a spot in the Hoosier League Tournament by winning the Grey (4th) league division. Although Brebeuf handled them easily, winning 9-0, the South Stars’ goalie did a fine job against us, stopping 25 of Brebeuf’s shots-on-goal. Seven different Brebeuf players scored the 9 goals, with 15 assists by 7 Braves players.

The Braves’ scoring increased with each period, with 2 Brebeuf scores in the first period (Robbins @ 12:41, Challis @1:59), 3 in the 2nd period (Worden @ 13:54, Robbins @11:32, DeRyckere @6:20), and 4 goals in the 3rd period (Robbins @ 14:07, Trosky @ 9:08, Gianaris @ 4:56, Ort @ 0:27). Sunday, February 10, 2008, 10:30AM vs. Carmel Gold at Forum at Fishers
(Hoosier League Semi-Final Tournament game)

As the winners of the previous meeting between these teams and the #3 seed behind the #2 seeded Carmel Gold, Brebeuf was the underdog in more ways than just seeding! Previously, there was nothing to loose…this time the change to advance to the Hoosier League finals was at stake! Staying out of the box had won the previous meeting…5 consecutive Brebeuf penalties at the end of the game gave Carmel Gold the advantage they needed to tie the score and then go on to score their 4th and winning goal during the sudden-death OT period.

Carmel Gold scored first at 9:34 in the first period on a 5-on-3 power-play. Challis evened the score at 7:03. Robbins was patient during a power-play opportunity to find Grande, who maneuvered to get open in front of the net and scored the go-ahead goal for Brebeuf! At 3:44 in the 2nd period, Brebeuf took advantage of another power-play opportunity, moving the puck around the zone until a Creighton to Grande to S. Bosserman combination scored, with Bosserman finding those few inches of daylight in the net! Carmel Gold dug in and came back with 2 consecutive goals, both on power-plays, during regulation time, scoring their 2nd goal at 0:29 in the 2nd and tying it with 1:12 left in the game.

The teams went into a 5-minute sudden-death overtime. Brebeuf received a penalty at 1:55 during the OT period, which gave Carmel Gold all they needed to put in a goal at 1:22.

Sunday, February 3, 2008, 10:30AM vs. HSE B at Forum at Fishers
(non-league game)

A “comedy of errors” may be used to describe Brebeuf’s game against HSE B, which ended in a 1-1 tie. This was the Braves first tie of the season, making their current record 29-9-1. It was a game of interesting twists and turns…

Twist #1: The game started with only 1 official. The 2 linesmen did not join him until well into the 2nd period. To his credit, he controlled the game and did his best to watch what was going on around the puck, behind the puck, and everywhere else!! (Editorial Note: As it turns out, this game was never on the IOHA schedule; one linesman came from the other rink when that game was done; the other was at the rink early for the next game!)

Turn #1: Robbins had the only official Brebeuf goal at 2:32 in the 2nd period and Wagner (goalie) had the assist! Wagner had cleared the puck, Robbins picked it up, and did his own twists and turns to get it up the ice and score!

Twist #2: Unofficially, the Braves had a 2nd goal (which was actually the first goal) by Grande in the first period. It was a rocket that curled around the back of the net and was covered by the HSE goalie as it came out of the net. Unfortunately, with only 1 official on the ice, he could not call it a goal because he had not seen it go in!

Turn #2: HSE B scored in the third at 5:32 on a power-play to tie the game.

WEEKEND: Friday, January 25th - Sunday, January 27th, 2008:

Individual game recaps below.
_____________________________________________________________

FRIDAY, January 25, 2008, 9:15PM vs. Carmel Gold (league)

For the second time in the history of the Brebeuf hockey program (i.e., since the fall of 1989), the team beat Carmel Gold, 3-1. Michael Bosserman had the first goal of the game, well into the first period (@ 4:47). Carmel Gold didn’t give up and got a garbage power-play goal in front of the net at 0:16 in the first. Brebeuf fought back (sometimes literally) with a goal, with assists from Creighton and Robbins, by Worden at 5:27 in the second. Robbins added a short-handed, third insurance goal at 10:13 in the third period, decreasing Carmel’s opportunity to pull their goalie.

Goalie Suzie Nasser played a tremendous game, making big saves when needed and withstanding Carmel’s attempts to take her out of the game. She had 29 saves for the game.

Punches abounded in the game, with one Carmel and one Brebeuf player (Worden) receiving game misconducts for “fisticuffs” and one player from each team (Creighton from Brebeuf) receiving 5 minute majors for roughing. Fortunately, Brebeuf player time in the box did not affect the outcome of the game.

SATURDAY, January 26, 2008, 9:15PM vs. Lawrence (league)

A Lawrence parent was overheard saying that the Lawrence hockey club had never lost on their senior night…until this night!!! The Brebeuf hockey team had come off a hard-won victory the night before, and headed into another! Brebeuf had 4 players on the sidelines due to injuries (Gianaris), illness (Key), absence (Challis), and a game misconduct (Worden). The others stepped up their game, and although they were showing signs of fatigue in the third period, they did not let down and got the job done, beating Lawrence, 4-2.

Lawrence scored on their first power-play opportunity at 12:57 in the first period. Brebeuf fought back with a Grande goal at 2:52 in the first. DeRyckere’s slap shot goal from the point scored in the second (5:08) on across-ice, along the blue lijne pass from Creighton. Lawrence tied it in the second (8:30) on a short-handed break-away. Brebeuf capitalized on their power-play opportunity in the third (8:27). Robbins set up the goal, sending a pass from the right-side point up and across to Grande, waiting just outside the left corner of the net. Grande’s shot was helped into the net by Matt DeRyckere, scoring the winning goal! At 3:10 in the third, Robbins put in that 4th “icing on the cake” goal, that sealed the Brebeuf victory.

It was another game where the Brebeuf players were on the receiving end of several “fisticuffs” situations that were never called. Fortunately, the Brebeuf players only came away with nothing more serious than scrapes and bruises!

SUNDAY, January 27, 2008, 10AM vs. Trinity Catholic High School (Louisville) (non-league)

The Brebeuf hockey team beat Trinity 3-1, but they had to fight for every goal. Trinity gave the Braves a good game, both teams playing scoreless through the first period. The last Brebeuf goal exemplified the teamwork in which this team prides itself. Robbins picked up the puck during a penalty-kill, started the rush up the ice with Michael Bosserman, dished the puck to Bosserman, who scored. Trinity spoiled the shut-out with a power-play goal in the second period.

Worden put Brebeuf back into the game supplying 2 goals in the second (12:13 and 8:00). Unfortunately, Park Tudor responded in kind, adding 2 goals at 6:45 and 0:12 to finish the second period. Grande added Brebeuf’s 3rd goal in the 3rd period (3:30), but Brebeuf couldn’t find any more and succumbed to the more physicial, “chippy” play of Park Tudor, with the game and championship belonging to Park Tudor.

Brebeuf received their Runner-Up trophy during an on-ice presentation.

FRIDAY, November 9, 2007, 9:15PM vs. Park Tudor (league)
CURRENT RECORD: 9-3-0
It was a typical fast and physical game against the Park Tudor Panthers. Brebeuf struck first with a goal by Challis at 12:11 in the first. Another Brebeuf goal was added by Werckenthien at 9:20 on a power play. Park Tudor’s first goal came on a tripping penalty that was awarded a penalty shot, which ended the first period scoring. Park Tudor scored 2 goals in the 2nd period to go ahead. Brebeuf didn’t give up and tied the game at 4:05 in the 2nd on a short-handed goal by Robbins. Brebeuf fought for 2 more goals, scoring at 10:33 and 8:02 on power plays (Werckenthien, S. Bosserman). SUNDAY, October 21, 2007, 12:15PM vs. Lawrence High School
Brebeuf advanced to the championship game with 14 total points from pool play. Lawrence advanced with 12 points [beating Cathedral 3-2 with 27 seconds left in their game.]

It was a fast and physical game against Lawrence. Each team had 3 penalties in the first, with Lawrence capitalizing on one of the power-plays and scoring at 5:36 in the first period. Brebeuf had 4 penalites to Lawrence’s 6 in the 2nd, with Lawrence scoring their 2nd goal on a power-play at 7:30 and Brebeuf, again, going scoreless in the period.

Brebeuf didn’t give up and Robbins scored just 9 seconds into the 3rd period. Brebeuf had 4 penalties in the 3rd, but Lawrence had 7, including 2 – 2+10 check-from-behind penalties, coming at/after 3:47. In the 3rd period, Brebeuf missed some scoring opportunities and Lawrence’s goalie kept them ahead in the game.

Time seemed to be running out for Brebeuf until Robbins connected and scored with 1:22 left in the game. The game ended in a 2-2 tie.

Tournament rules called for one 4-minute, sudden-death overtime period. Both teams emerged scoreless from the OT. The championship would be determined by a shoot-out. As the home team, Brebeuf would shoot second/after each Lawrence player. The 2 Lawrence players, with the 2+10 penalties, were ineligible to participate in the shoot-out. Coach Perkins chose Chip Challis, Ben Grande, Grant Worden, and Mike Robbins, to shoot in that order.

Lawrence’s first player went and was stopped. Chip Challis went and scored! Lawrence’s next player went and missed, but so did Grande. Lawrence’s 3rd player was also stopped by Brebeuf’s goalie, Susie Nasser, but Worden also missed. Susie being on her game was critical!!! Lawrence’s 4th player shot, and was shut down by Nasser. Robbins didn’t have to shoot. Challis’s score had won it for Brebeuf!

Brebeuf brought home the trophy from the first annual Shamrock Tournament.

WEEKEND, October 19-21, 2007 (recaps below) - Current Record: 6-2-0
The Braves Varsity Hockey Team had a busy weekend, bringing home the Championship Trophy from the first annual Shamrock Tournament sponsored by Trinity High School, in Louisville, KY. Pool play points were tallied based upon winning the periods (1 point for winning/1/2 point for tie/0 points for losing period) plus winning the game (2 points for win/1 point for a tie/0 points for loss), with the top 2 advancing to the championship from any division. Brebeuf beat teams from OH and KY 9-3, 4-2, and 11-1 in pool play and receiving 14 points (the top advancing score) to earn them the spot in the championship game. There, they beat Indy’s Lawrence team, 3-2.

SATURDAY, October 20, 2007, 5:15PM vs. Badin High School
