“A special note from the coach:”
Welcome to the Brebeuf Jesuit Hockey 2011-12 season
The 2011-12 Brebeuf Jesuit hockey team began preparations for the upcoming season with three weeks of on-ice conditioning that began on Monday, August 15. The team also met on Sunday, August 21 for a very robust, constructive and enlightening team building workshop. All in all the efforts from everyone through August have set a positive tone for the year. On Tuesday, September 6 the team began their regular practice schedule. The season opening game has been scheduled for September 24 versus HSE B. The uniqueness behind this game is that it is slated for a 12:00 o’clock midnight puck drop. I am excited for our team to participate in HS hockey’s version of “Midnight Madness”. In addition to regular league and exhibition games our schedule also includes tournaments in Indy, Louisville, and Fort Wayne. Our season will wind up in early March 2012 with what I hope to be our participation in one of the four Indiana State High School Hockey Association championship games.
I have been very pleased so far with the effort on the ice and how well the player’s have been working together. This year will be challenging on more than one front as we try to integrate an unusually large group of first year varsity players with the returning lettermen. Of the 19 players on our roster, 8 are new to playing high school varsity hockey. On a relative basis we are a fairly young team with only 2 seniors, however a solid group of 8 juniors will definitely reinforce the overall level of experience on this team.
The 2011-12 Brebeuf Jesuit Varsity Hockey Team:
Seniors:
Forward: Andrew Marchesani
Goaltender: Jackson Hammond
Juniors:
Forward: Max Challis, Brett Fehr, Eric Speer, Will Vandebelt
Defense: Bob Demaree, Joe Girardin, Walter Nesbit
Goaltender: Colin Walker
Sophomores:
Defense: Ben King, Harrison Kulak, John Murphy, Pierce Wagner
Freshman:
Forward: Rex Barrett, JW Demaree, Ryan Dvornik,
Defense: Ryan Vierhile
Goaltender: Will Harsha
As has been the case in previous years our commitment to conditioning has to be the foundation for everything else that follows. The focus on consistent maximal effort combined with the attention to our systems and a dedication to improving individual skills will allow this team to be in the best possible position to be successful throughout the season.
I hold very optimistic and high expectations for this year’s hockey team. I anticipate plenty of early learning opportunities playing against more experienced teams. However, as long as each player maintains his commitment to himself and his teammates we will steadily improve as the season progresses.
One of the main drivers behind my optimism lies with the excellent coaching staff I have working with me. We are extremely fortunate to see returning again for another season coaches: Fritz Steck, Joey Girardin and Willie Mitchell. Their collective knowledge of the game of hockey and their boundless enthusiasm to teach our players how to play the game to the best of their abilities and to strive to raise their limitations is invaluable.
I look forward to another great season of Brebeuf Jesuit hockey. Please browse our website (brebeufhockey.com). You will find a wide variety information on the team, including our schedule.
Once again I welcome you to our season.
Strength within and pride throughout.
GO BRAVES!!!

2010-11 Season
|
Welcome to the Brebeuf Jesuit Hockey 2010-11 season.
Before I introduce the players and coaches who comprise this year’s team I would like to take a moment to thank Mr. Russ Sherlock for his continuing support as our team manager. This season is Russ’s third consecutive year working behind the scenes of the Brebeuf Jesuit hockey program. Russ’s dedication and tireless efforts have made my job as head coach so much easier. Russ Sherlock has been a stalwart supporter of all that this program stands for – the complete physical, mental and emotional development of our players. Russ’s commitment to our players has consistently upheld the foundational principles of Brebeuf Jesuit hockey. Throughout my high school hockey coaching career I have been privileged to have worked with countless parents who have given immeasurable hours of their time to ensure that our players have the best experience they could have as a member of the Brebeuf Jesuit hockey team. Over the past three years I have not met a parent who puts more effort into making sure that happens for each and every one of them than Russ Sherlock.
At this writing the 2010-11 Braves are 17 games into the season and have already surpassed last year’s overall number of wins by 3 and that number will continue to grow. The reason behind this marked improvement and increased potential is due to a variety of factors. Overall our individual player ability quotient has improved dramatically. This improvement is a combination of our returning player’s growth and maturity as well as the addition of new players whose skill-base and competitive nature has added significantly our depth.
Our senior class consists of the following defensemen: Team Captain Corben Sherlock, Assistant Captain Oliver Henderson and Assistant Captain Philip French. Our senior forwards are: Assistant Captain Chip Challis, Hunter Dyar and Jordan Ip. We were very fortunate to have assigned to us from the Park Tudor hockey program (which had to suspend operations this season) senior goaltender Haley Edmonds.
Our junior class is small in number but large in impact with forwards Andrew Marchesani and Max French (brother of senior Philip) and goaltender Jackson Hammond.
Our sophomore class is probably one of the largest we have seen in our program’s 22 years. Between the pipes is Amelia Henderson (sister of senior Oliver). Playing defense are Joe Girardin and Walt Nesbitt. At forward are Brett Fehr, Eric Speer, Aiden Ip (brother of senior Jordan), Bob Demaree, Max Challis (brother of senior Chip) and Will Vandebelt.
Our freshman class this season consists of forward Ben King. Ben’s skills and tenacity will most definitely overshadow his relative inexperience playing for the first time at the high school level.
Behind the bench this season I welcome the return of assistant coach Fritz Steck. In addition to the wealth of experience Coach Fritz brings I am very pleased to announce that also joining the coaching staff are Joe Girardin and Willie Mitchell. Coach Girardin will work primarily with our defensemen and Coach Mitchell’s responsibilities lay with our three goaltenders.
In closing I would like to say that even though our overall expectations for success are high for this team the basis for that success will be measured not just in the win-loss column. The opportunity for individual and collective growth are everywhere both on and off the ice for these young student-athletes. As it has been in the past it continues to be my desire to provide all of our players the chance to develop skills that will take them far beyond the ice rink and that in doing so they will retain good memories of their time spent with each other as members of the Brebeuf Jesuit hockey program.
Strength within and pride throughout.
GO BRAVES!!!

2009-10 Season
|
Thank you for visiting the Brebeuf Jesuit Hockey website. It is with a measured blend of pride, privilege and honour that I welcome everyone to the 20th season of Brebeuf Jesuit Hockey. As most of my players - past and present - will tell you I am never lacking in the tried and true well-worn clichés for just about any pre or post game talk. So when I say I “where has the time gone”? or “it just seems like yesterday that I was being introduced to the parents and players of the first team back in 1989” it really hits home in a very profound way to think about all that this hockey program has accomplished in twenty years.
It has been a pleasure to have worked with so many dedicated parents. As I write this it is difficult to not wander down a variety of paths that all speak to the efforts of the countless moms and dads for whom without their support, commitment and faith in what this hockey program stands for there would not have been the years and years of continued success we have experienced.
I have been truly blessed to have worked over the years with excellent hockey coaches that provided guidance, insights and knowledge of the game to not only our players but to me as well. They along with myself have been fortunate to be a hockey coach and in doing so have had an opportunity to give something back to this great game.
Cliché time again … all players know this one “you play for the name on the front of your jersey, not the one on the back” … Without that name we would not be here today. The acceptance of this team by the Brebeuf Jesuit Athletic Department and school as a whole has made all the difference in the world to me right from the start. Not being an ISHSAA sanctioned sport has not deterred Brebeuf Jesuit from recognizing the dedication and commitment in which our players have represented the school. By awarding that effort year after year with Varsity letters and including our team in regular athletic department events Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School has helped to foster and maintain a great relationship between the hockey players, the parents, the coaches and the entire school that by my estimation is extremely rare within Indiana high school club sports.
I take one last moment here to focus on the players. To all of you who endured the 5:30am practices; who worked hard and long to improve their skills, who gave up Friday and Saturday nights from September to March, who endured at least one or two of my infamous “chats” after a less than spectacular performance (true I have mellowed somewhat since those early years – or at least that is what various alumni who visit during the season from time to time tell me!), who combined athleticism with academic excellence, who wore the Maroon and Gold with pride … I say THANK YOU! For it is you that helped keep the game fun for me. It is you who helped me stay young at heart. And it is you to whom I look forward to seeing at every alumni game and from whom I get my most treasured memories of our time together – the good, the not so good and most importantly the joy that only spending time together with individuals bonded by a common thread of commitment, effort and a love for the game of hockey can share as a team. – Thank you!

2008-09 Season
The 2008-09 season offers many challenges as the Brebeuf Jesuit Braves hockey team roster has more new and younger faces on it than we are used to seeing in recent years. As all teams deal with the reality of graduating seniors and the associated loss of size, skill and experience so to do we have to adjust to a different group. The key for our team this year will be how willing each player is to giving his best effort every time he steps on the ice whether it is a practice or game. I have communicated my expectations with respect to the importance of a consistently improving effort to the whole team. The difficulty here is that all of our players are at different levels of awareness to the issue of giving their best effort. As the season progresses I am confident that our younger players will learn from their early experiences how to match their efforts to my expectations. A considerable effort will also have to come from our upperclassmen in regards to their commitment to setting the correct examples for the newer players.
Here is the 2008-09 roster:
Our senior class is well suited to take a strong leadership role as most of them have been with the varsity program for their entire high school hockey career. With that experience comes a responsibility to take every advantage they can to assist our younger players in their development. Our senior’s commitment to this task is a huge one and their success will be seen in our team’s continued improvement throughout the season. Our seniors are led by team captain Elliott Trosky (defense), and his two assistant captains; Andru Creighton (defense) and Ben Grande (forward). Forwards Mike Robbins, Marc Goldsticker and University High School senior Daniel Warshauer round out the remaining seniors.
Forwards Stuart Bosserman and Jason Ort fill out the junior class. Our sophomore class has a blend of returning players and players new to the varsity level. On defense are Corben Sherlock and Oliver Henderson – both played varsity as freshmen last season. The lone returning sophomore forward is Chip Challis. Our new sophomore on defense is Andrew Demaree. The new sophomore forwards are Sam Cohn, Hunter Dyar, Joey Hinkebein and Phillip French (Phillip will also see time on the blue line). In goal Harrison Wagner returns from a very successful freshman year. Our two freshmen are forward Andrew Marchesani and goalie Jackson Hammond.
Once again I am very fortunate to be joined by extremely dedicated and knowledgeable assistant coaches - Fritz Steck and our goalie coach Mike Schallert (Mike Hutchings has stepped away as a fulltime assistant to spend more time on his new business, but will be helping throughout the season as his schedule allows). As stated above the challenge for this year’s coaching staff will be to balance our needs to develop and improve fundamental skills in each of our players as well as ensuring that our expectations for consistent effort in all areas of the game are met. If there is a commitment from each and every player to consciously give his best in practice and games we will steadily improve and ultimately we will be successful.
As it has been part of the principles of Brebeuf Jesuit hockey since day one, this team will be no different in how they represent the school on and off the ice - with class and good sportsmanship.
I would like to congratulate the 2007-08 Brebeuf Jesuit Braves hockey team for winning their 5th Henry G Schallert Team Academic Award. Our emphasis on maintaining a balanced commitment to athletic and academic effort has not changed and I fully expect us to be in the running again this year. This award is presented to the ISHSHA team with the highest overall GPA and like all aspects of Brebeuf Jesuit Hockey it focuses on the importance of teamwork.
To say that this season will be challenging for players and coaches alike is an understatement. However, without the challenges there would be no opportunities to learn and grow. I am very confident that each and every one of us is up to the challenge before us and will meet it with strength within and pride throughout. GO BRAVES!!!
